How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep Naturally – Try Positive Transformation!
This may, or may not, surprise you but, any optimistic person can enjoy a good night’s sleep … naturally, with meditation and mindfulness.
A study from the University of Illinois (USA) shows that the more optimistic a person is, the better are her or his chances of getting a proper night’s sleep.
The conclusion of the American researchers? …
“Be optimistic, change your view of the world to see everything in pink, and everything will be better.”
But it’s not that easy …
You Can’t Change That at the Snap of Your Fingers
If it was enough to decide to become an optimist it would be easy.
Unfortunately, in life, what we want or decide most of the time has no consequences. We cannot change character at will. We can’t even change our behavior:
- How many students decide each time they start the school year to work more and finish as in the previous year?
- How many people decide to play sports, diet, or stop eating chocolate, to give up at the first temptation?
- And, how many people would like to become, nicer, funnier, more relaxed, or more serious overnight, but can’t do it?
Unfortunately, we cannot “decide” to change by snapping our fingers. We are much more complicated than that.
Human beings are not like a rider who guides his horse.
If so, anyone could “decide” whether to become an Olympic champion, a Nobel laureate or a musician.
It would be enough to “decide” first thing in the morning to train 12 hours a day and, after a few years, you would become a champion in athletics, in math or a great musician, based on our decision.
But that is impossible. Because we also have within us “someone” who wants to rest, to go out and see friends and family, devote themselves to their hobbies and usual occupations, cook, etc. and who collides with the one who had decided to “become champion” of this or that.
Our personality is a disparate and incoherent assembly of multiple contradictory “sub-personalities”.
The best way to represent ourselves is not as “one personality“, but a disparate and incoherent assemblage of multiple “sub-personalities“.
These little personalities are like rowdy children in a playground, they deprive you of your lovely night’s sleep!
Don’t Let Them Rob You of a Well Earned Peaceful Night’s Sleep …
Everyone wants something and does everything to get it, regardless of others.
So, for example, there was in me a little John who “decided” to write his letter about health this morning.
But another little John, at the same time and in the same body, the same head, wanted to look out the window and go out for a walk.
Logically, they began to fight to take control of the “big” John.
But that’s not all …
At the same time, another little John decided it was time to make himself a cup of coffee.
Another little John raised his finger and recalled that he had promised a friend to call him.
Then, another little John remembered that he had to stop by the supermarket to buy fish.
And then, another little John noticed that his desk was cluttered with books and documents so, before starting to write, it was better to tidy up the space.
And again, another little John said that no one had cleared off the breakfast table, that someone should also sweep the floor, check the news on the Internet, go to the bank and the Post Office, and so on …
Can you imagine the mess?
We Cannot Give Preference to Our “First Choice”, Forgetting the Others
You can always try to prioritize your “first choice”, the others will not go away.
They will continue to negotiate, to beg, to get impatient, to get you to give in.
Some of them are very strenuous. These are the guys, the little terrors of the playground: this particular John who is hungry, who is thirsty, who is sleepy, who has to pay the bills … These always end up taking the upper hand at some point or another.
All you can hope for is to keep them at bay for as long as possible to achieve your priority goal, but you will never be able to make them disappear totally.
Because they will always come back knocking on your door to claim their due, until you finally give in.
This is how John finds himself, on certain days, deciding, simultaneously, to go out, to enter, to come back up to the first floor, to go down to the cellar, to look for his keys, to take out the trash, to play a few piano notes, bring in some logs, start an herbal tea, put away a book, phone a friend …
And, all that without even typing the first word of the letter he had “firmly decided” to write that morning!!
The morning ends and the page remains blank. Does that relate to you? …
Put Your Priorities in The Right Order and Get Your First Complete Night’s Sleep!
Does this mean that John lacked willpower, or discipline?
Not necessarily.
But it turns out that, indeed, that day, the “good pupil” John was dominated by others. We put him in the corner, while the others had the field.
The problem, then, is how to bring order on to the playground?
We can do it. But it is, by itself, a very long, difficult, tiring work to get on with.
This work consists in getting to grow in yourself the “sub-personalities” that you like, to help you achieve the life goals that are important to you. And to contain, as much as possible, those which take up too much space for your tastes.
Like a school principal, you have to be able to channel the trouble makers!
We cannot suddenly decide to discipline. So a school principal cannot, at the blow of a whistle, turn restless students into an obedient class.
We will have to go there gradually, for that you might need some advice from The School of Transformation, they have a great team of very dedicated professional.
Take Stock, Without Kidding Yourself, on the Forces Involved
You must start by taking stock, without lying to yourself:
- Who are the disruptors?
- Who is the leader?
- What are the realistic measures to evolve?
- Who are the potential students?
- How many are they really?
- What do they need to thrive?
It means looking at your actions with courage. What are you really doing with your time, with your life?
You have to dare to watch yourself live, as if you were at the cinema.
And it doesn’t necessarily have to be Indiana Jones or James Bond. The first time you watch the movie, the “hero” is rather pathetic. He / she looks more like a wanderer, like Charlot, Forrest Gump, Pinocchio when he was still a puppet, or Simba, the son of the Lion King, before realizing he was capable of taking back the throne from his father.
At the start of the week, you might have decided to work seriously, not to snack any more, to go to bed at a fixed time, etc. …
- But what did you actually do?
- How long have you actually worked in the ideal way, according to your own criteria of efficiency?
- What was the real balance between your healthy food and junk food?
- How long have you actually done sports?
If the Toll Is Severe, It Does Not Matter!
A lot of times you’ll have to admit to yourself that you have done next to nothing, or even done nothing at all.
You will have to admit that you let the rascals win at each recess. That the good students are in hiding, or even that they have all deserted school a long time ago !!
But recognizing it is already a first step, from which you will be able to build.
“Since I didn’t do a single minute of sports, even though I had promised myself to do four hours, maybe my goal was unrealistic. I’m going to set a goal of doing 5 minutes of exercise, or 2 minutes, or even 30 seconds, and see if I get there. Because it will already be progress, compared to nothingness.“
A very common and legitimate thought!
Indeed, your goal is not to become perfect overnight, but to get started!
And to get started, you have to set a goal that you are sure to achieve. This avoids discouragement.
Recognizing at this point your weakness, even your “nullity“, becomes an asset.
Because, at least, you are building on something sure, solid, with achievable goals.
You are not starting from the illusory point of view that you “should be able to” exercise 12 hours a week.
If you are doing zero hours, zero minutes of exercise, then maybe a realistic goal for you is to do 5 minutes of exercise. But if you can’t do 5 minutes, then you have to reduce, reduce, reduce: one minute, thirty seconds, ten seconds?
No one is ever ‘bad’
Obviously, it is painful. Because then you might think that you are much weaker than you thought.
“What, who am I to not be able to do more than ten seconds of sport?” A loser ??”
No, not necessarily “a failure”, because everyone has talents they want and can develop. But if the truth is that you are much weaker than you would like to be, then it is better to admit it to yourself. So you can start working on it.
We are never completely “null” to begin with. This is precisely what gives life so much. We can always decide to do something, to try to become a little better, or a little less bad, even if we are weak or disabled.
On the other hand, once you are on your way, it will become possible on a regular basis to reassess what constitutes a reasonable goal for yourself.
And so, day after day, week after week, month after month, you will become stronger.
No One Can Know How Far You Can Go, Once You Are on Your Way …
In the long run, ant steps add up and you may be surprised to find yourself, without even realizing it, one day taking giant leaps.
You actually have no idea what goals you can achieve after many years of effort.
Your life will become much better, much more wonderful than you ever imagined.
There is in fact no limit to what you can become.
No one, including yourself, knows your true potential.
But your adaptability is amazing, you can really transform yourself in some incredible ways.
Become Truly “Optimistic” in Order to Enjoy a Sound Night’s Sleep!
Likewise, one can turn from pessimist to optimist, but not overnight.
You have in you a bunch of rascals who constantly tell you:
- “You suck”,
- “Or, you are bad”,
- “Anyway, it is useless to work”,
- “And then the teacher is a fascist”,
- “He decided to screw you up”,
- “You have to take revenge “,
- “Go beat him up on the way out”,
- and so on …
It is these sub-personalities that fuel in you envy, jealousy, laziness, anger, revenge, the desire to destroy everything, to end it.
Fortunately, no one is completely inhabited by such personalities. There will also always be within you, somewhere, a personality that want you to do well:
- listen,
- work,
- give the best of themselves,
- imagine,
- move forward,
- build,
- help,
- forgive,
- start over,
- etc. …
But it may be that these characters have lost the habit of imposing themselves in your “indoor playground”.
Every time they raise their heads, one of our little “thugs” hits them. And if they persist, they join forces to “fix them“. And that’s how you may end up, dominated by negative and destructive feelings (and actions).
To change, to return the power, or at least part of the power, to the positive and optimistic personalities who reside in you, you must work to give them back their power, to nourish them, to make them grow, in short, to take care of them. .
For this, you must learn to reward yourself each time you achieve a goal, in other words each time you manage to empower the little character you have chosen.
For example, if you manage to give control to your little John, the “good pupil” and to give him time to write his letter until the end, then he must have a reward, such as the right to go for an hour in his vegetable garden, see his tomato plants and prepare a plum tart.
Thus, you have to learn to be human, and kind to yourselves. You must educate, in joy and good humor, the good personalities that are in you, by trying to value them, to put them forward, to reward them.
This is how, little by little, life becomes happier, that we have opportunities for real satisfaction and that we naturally become … optimistic. And that we find a good night’s sleep every night.
However, it is Easier to Say than to do, Right?
Yes, it does require a tremendous amount of willpower, and not everyone has it. If you are, like I once was, one of those among the many who find it difficult to set your goals and organize your life then, deal with your priorities, have a good night’s sleep, etc., you need help!
Help is not difficult to find, and I can highly recommend the School of Positive Transformation.
That reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:
“If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.”
