Health Benefits of Bee Propolis – This Incredible Remedy Made by Bees
I can hear some of you, dear readers, wondering already how can the bee propolis have any health benefits?
“A remedy made by bees?” Really? … Surely in some occult medicine. Who can believe that the bees’ product can heal, apart from a few ailments or hippies who think that Nature is necessarily good and beneficent? “
Many think so, even in the medical profession.
I must admit that ten years ago, I was not far from thinking like that.
Before I was struck by health problems myself, I believed that modern medicine was 100% scientific and all-powerful. And that a medicine prescribed by a doctor was bound to be better than a traditional natural remedy.
It really shows that I did not understand anything, right?
But, What are Bee Propolis and What Are Their Health Benefits?
I guess that Wikipedia has the best answer to that:
Propolis or bee glue is a resinous mixture that honey bees produce by mixing saliva and beeswax with exudate gathered from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. It is used as a sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive. Propolis is used for small gaps (approximately 6 millimeters (0.24 in) or less), while larger spaces are usually filled with beeswax. Its color varies depending on its botanical source, with dark brown as the most common.

In Fact, Bee Propolis Has a Number of Incredible Health Benefits
Against winter infections, of course!
This is one that a lot of people know already.
The ability of propolis to kill microbes has been known since ancient times. That’s even why it’s made by bees.
Bees use it to plug holes in the hive and protect it from external aggressions. Thanks to propolis, a hive is even more sterile than the most sterile of operating theaters!
Even Better: Bees Also Use Propolis to “Mummify Corpses”!
Yes, because if they wouldn’t, it could be a matter of life and death for whole bee colony.
Indeed, sometimes a small, hungry rodent will sneak into the hive in search of a good, sweet meal. Within minutes, the poor animal usually succumbs to the blows of stings and venom.
But his corpse then endangers the whole hive. Because it’s going to decompose, putrefy, with all the consequences you can imagine.
So the bees embalm it … with propolis. And it is very effective!
This is what gave the Egyptians the idea to embalm their pharaohs … and they used propolis in particular to do it!
So, you understand why propolis is powerfully effective against bacteria, viruses and parasites.
And that’s why it’s in your best interest to take it at the slightest start of a sore throat!
Don’t hesitate if you have a cold, sinusitis or the flu, either: several studies show that propolis reduces symptoms and speeds recovery.
But These Are Not the Only Health Benefits of the Bee Propolis, Far from It!
In fact, propolis can help you with almost all pathologies where viruses and bacteria are present … and there are a lot of them! …
Heartburn, ulcer, herpes, acne, oral infections etc.
Here is a little list of health problems for which propolis has scientifically validated efficacy:
- Oral infections: propolis has long been used in dentistry (it is also found in good toothpastes!). Its efficacy works beautifully against gingivitis, dental hypersensitivity or periodontitis;
- Herpes and shingles: Romanian researchers tested the effectiveness of a 50% propolis ointment on lesions caused by shingles or herpes … and this caused improvement in 97% of cases. Same very positive results found by Israeli herpes researchers;
- Acne: a propolis-based cream is effective thanks to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and healing effects;
- Stomach ulcers: even before it was discovered that they were caused by bacteria (Helicobacter Pylori), 3 Russian research teams had confirmed the effectiveness of propolis in treating stomach ulcers;
- Gastroesophageal Reflux: sucking propolis lozenges has many benefits against reflux: not only are its antibacterial and pain-relieving effects helpful, but it activates saliva, which shows to have anti-reflux effects (chewing gum for example reduces pain).
These are great reasons to always have propolis in your family pharmacy.
But don’t just use it to solve a problem. It is also valuable in preventing you from falling ill.
Because it also has a very positive effect on your natural defenses, those which protect you against diseases.
For example, a team of Italian researchers recently showed that supplementation of drops of propolis mother tincture combined with zinc reduced the occurrence of chronic otitis by 32%.
And that’s not all …
Cancer, Brain, Heavy Metals … Other Benefits to Discover …
I do not have the opportunity to go into the details of all the benefits of propolis that remain to be explored.
But be aware however, that …
- Propolis has an anti-cancer potential to be explored: in vitro, it prevents tumors from proliferating;
- It can protect your liver against many toxic substances, such as pesticides and heavy metals;
- It could have a preventive effect on brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s;
- Its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects could be valuable in osteoarthritis.
Ultimately, it would be almost faster to list what propolis has no effect on!
It must be said that its richness in polyphenols is impressive. Propolis contains the same therapeutic nutrients found in superfoods like blackberries, strawberries, onions, broccoli, or green tea.
But it is probably the essential oils in use in propolis that explain its astonishing action against viruses and bacteria.
All This Without Any Side Effects!
And the magic is that all of these benefits fall on you without any unwanted effects.
The only risk is the allergy. The unfortunate few who are allergic to bee products should avoid it.
But otherwise, it poses no problem!
So you understand why it would be a shame not to use the bee propolis for all its health benefits.
Of course, propolis will never have the immediate mass effect of antibiotics against bacteria, antacids against heartburn or Roaccutane against acne.
But all of these drugs have terrible side effects when taken long term … whereas propolis only has long term positive effects for your body!
The only requirement is that you have to know how to choose it and use it …
Quality First !
Above all, don’t try to do go cheap with propolis.
Because if you choose the poor quality, you risk ending up with a propolis full of heavy metals and pesticides!
You can also come across a propolis which is not effective because it is too rich in wax (which has few properties) and poor in resin (where the polyphenols are too high doses!).
I don’t have personal knowledge of the laboratories that make propolis, but I have read with great interest several books on how to treat yourself with bee products, written by some knowledgeable and masters on the subject which seem to me to offer excellent guarantees of reliability.
It is best to use propolis in capsules as a priority, except in certain indications, such as heartburn (chewing gum) or skin problems (balm to apply).
In case of infection or acute problem, do not hesitate to take large doses: 600 to 800 mg (3 to 4 capsules) 3 times a day (so about 2000 mg per day).
In prevention, you can take cures of around 20 days, at each change of season, for example. Then take about 800 mg per day, 2 capsules morning and evening.
You will see: propolis has such a wide field of action that on its own it can replace a quarter or a third of all the products in your family pharmacy.
So enjoy it ! … and …
